THE HELLENIC INSTITUTE OF MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY (1973-2026)

The Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology (Η.Ι.Μ.Α.) was founded in 1973 and is a recognized non-profit, scientific organization.

The purpose of Η.Ι.Μ.Α. is the organization and promotion of nautical archaeological research in Greece, so as to support and assist in the difficult work carried out by the Greek Archaeological Service. From 1973 to 1976, when the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities was established, Η.Ι.Μ.Α. served as the official advisor to the Ministry of Culture on matters of underwater archaeology.

The Institute, throughout its 50 years of activity, has engaged highly significant sponsoring bodies from both the public and private sectors, in Greece and abroad. It has managed grants from European research programs, state bodies, private philanthropic foundations, companies and individuals. This is achieved because it is able to demonstrate significant scientific work, organizational competence, high volunteer participation, as well as the sensitivity to communicate the results of its efforts to the wider public…

In addition to approximately 500 regular members based in Greece, the Institute also counts leading international scientists and researchers in underwater and nautical archaeology among its corresponding members.
In recent years, given the absence of any dedicated university programme in this field in Greece, H.I.M.A. has effectively served as the sole training ground in the country for young specialists in this niche but vital area of research. Through its research activities, educational programmes, and conferences, the Institute has trained over 150 young archaeologists, scientists from related disciplines, and technical specialists in the theory and practice of Underwater and Nautical Archaeology.

ENALIA

The journal ENALIA was founded in 1988 by Nikos Tsouchlos and Yannis Vichos. The first issue was published in a limited number of copies, in the form of a brief informational bulletin, in December 1987. The first volume of the periodical publication was released in February 1989. It is the only specialized journal for underwater and nautical archaeology published in Greece and one of the very few in the world. Since 2002, the journal ENALIA has been circulating in its new format.
