Members of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology

The Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology was founded on the initiative of the late visionary of underwater archaeology in Greece, Nikos Tsouchlos, in consultation and agreement with researcher Peter Throckmorton and archaeologists Charalambos Kritzas and Georgios Papathanassopoulos. Since 1973, the year of H.I.M.A.’s founding, approximately 500 members have been registered in the Institute’s records. The members of the Institute are classified as regular, honorary and corresponding members.

Regular Members

Regular members are all those who can actively promote the objectives of the Institute. To register as a regular member, one must submit a relevant application to the Board of Directors, accompanied by the endorsement of three regular members of the Institute. In their application, they must declare that they accept the Statutes and the decisions of the Institute’s governing bodies. Active regular members of the Institute must not have their membership fees unjustifiably outstanding for a period of two years.

Honorary Members

Honorary members may be elected from among those who render exceptional services to the Institute or contribute outstandingly to the fulfillment of its objectives. Those who have served as Presidents of the Institute and rendered exceptional services to it may be proclaimed Honorary Presidents of the Institute.

Corresponding Members

Corresponding members may be those who reside abroad and are able to contribute to the achievement of the Institute’s objectives. Corresponding members are elected by decision of the Board of Directors, following the proposal of two Board members and by a two-thirds majority of the Board of Directors. The registration of the above members takes place upon written acceptance of their election. Corresponding members are not required to pay registration fees or annual membership dues.

To register as a regular member, you must submit a relevant application to the Board of Directors, accompanied by the endorsement of three regular members of the Institute. In your application, you must declare that you accept the Statutes and the decisions of the Institute’s governing bodies.

Upon approval of your application by H.I.M.A.’s Board of Directors, your registration in H.I.M.A.’s Member Registry is completed upon payment of the one-time registration fee (€20) and your membership subscription for the current year (€30), either by direct payment at our offices at 9 Saripoulou St., Athens 106 82, or by deposit into H.I.M.A.’s bank account.
